Rainy day date ideas at home
For the day the plan got rained out. Everything here starts within ten minutes of deciding.
Storm watch (15 minutes, free)
Lights off, chairs by the biggest window, one blanket. If there’s thunder, count the seconds after each flash and guess whether the storm is coming or going. A cup of something hot is the only prep.
Paint the same mug (30 minutes, free to $5)
Put one object on the table: a mug, a shoe, a houseplant. Each of you paints or sketches it with whatever’s in the house, no peeking. Sign them and trade.
Breakfast for dinner (40 minutes, about $8)
Pancakes or eggs at seven in the evening, in pajamas. One of you cooks, the other runs the toppings: fruit, syrup, whatever is in the door of the fridge. First step: check for flour and eggs.
A co-op video game (1 hour, free if you own one)
Choose a game where you’re on the same team, so nobody spends the evening losing. No console? Plenty of two-player games run on one keyboard or two phones. Decide the stopping point before you start.
Move one piece of furniture (1 hour, free)
Pick a corner that annoys at least one of you. Sketch the new layout on paper first, then move the chair, the lamp, or the shelf. Live with it for a week before you vote.
An indoor campout (2 hours, about $5)
Sleeping bags or every blanket you own on the living room floor, a flashlight, and s’mores made under the oven broiler. You’ll need graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows. Phones stay outside the tent line.
A spa hour (45 minutes, $5–10)
Two bowls of warm water for your feet, a couple of sheet masks from the drugstore, and towels warmed in the dryer. Put on something slow. First step: start the towels.
Living room karaoke (30 minutes, free)
Search any song title plus “karaoke” and the lyrics come up on screen. Three songs each and one duet to close. A wooden spoon is a fine microphone.
Date ideas at home for a lazy weekend
Low effort by design. Nothing here needs you to get dressed.
The crossword, one pen (30 minutes, free)
A newspaper puzzle or a free one online, and a single pen you pass back and forth. Coffee first. If you’re stuck for two minutes, you’re allowed to look up one answer.
A reading hour (45 minutes, free)
Same couch, your own books, a timer set for forty-five minutes. When it rings, each of you tells the other one thing from what you just read.
A build with no instructions (1 hour, free to $20)
A small brick set or a box of old pieces from a closet. Agree on what you’re making, like a house or a ship, and build it together without the booklet.
Dumpling folding (1 hour, about $10)
Store-bought wrappers, one bowl of filling, a cup of water for sealing the edges. Fold at the table until the wrappers run out. Cook half tonight and freeze the rest flat on a tray.
Pilot roulette (40 minutes, free)
Each of you picks a show neither has seen. Watch the first ten minutes of each, then a third one chosen at random. Vote on which earns a second episode.
The unfinished-project hour (1 hour, free)
Everyone has a shelf to hang, a shirt to mend, or a drawer to sort. Bring one each, put on music, and work side by side. Show the result at the end.
A scheduled nap (1 hour, free)
Set an alarm for forty minutes and take the afternoon nap you both want anyway. Whoever wakes up first makes the coffee.
Indoor date ideas out of the house
For when you need a change of walls. Most of these are quieter and cheaper on a weekday.
The aquarium or planetarium (90 minutes, $15–30 each)
Dark, calm, and built for walking slowly. Buy timed tickets online, since they’re often cheaper than at the door. Each of you picks a favorite creature or a favorite planet.
Paint-your-own pottery (90 minutes, $15–25 a piece)
Walk-in studios hand you a blank mug and the paints. Make one for each other and don’t show it until it’s done. They fire the pieces, and you pick them up a week later.
A board game café (2 hours, $5–8 cover each)
Ask the staff for a two-player game that takes under half an hour to learn. Play it twice, since the second round is where it gets good. Order one thing to share.
Indoor mini golf or a pool table (1 hour, $10–15 each)
Either one works when neither of you is good at it. Play best of three. First step: check whether the place needs a reservation on weekends.
An arcade and a ten-dollar limit (45 minutes, $10)
Ten dollars in credits, split evenly. Play one game side by side, one against each other, and spend the last credit on the machine neither of you understands.
The furniture-store apartment (1 hour, free)
Walk a big furniture showroom and design a room you’ll never buy. Each of you furnishes it with five pieces and defends the choices on the display sofa.
A free gallery night (1 hour, free)
Many galleries hold open evenings once a month, and nobody checks whether you plan to buy. Search your city’s name plus “gallery night.” Pick the piece you’d hang and the one you’d hide.
