Guess My Answer: a question game for couples

Five questions, and for each one you give your own answer and your guess about your partner. The answers open at the same moment, once you’ve both replied, and you see where you matched and where you surprised each other.

  • Time: 5–10 minutes
  • Format: Two devices
  • Sign-up: No email

Example

Which household title have you earned?

  • Head of Snacks
  • Keeper of the Remote
  • Minister of Cozy
  • Chief of Alarms

How the game goes

  1. Create a room with the couples deck

Press “Start a game”. No email is needed for your first game.

  2. Invite your partner with a link

Send the invite link. Your partner opens it on their own device and you let them in.

  3. Answer for yourself, guess for your partner

Each round has a question and two to four options. You make two picks: your own answer and the one you think your partner will choose. They do the same about you.

  4. Wait for the reveal

Until you’ve both answered, the answers stay hidden. Then both screens show, at the same moment, who picked what and who guessed right.

  5. See the result after five rounds

The game shows how many times you picked the same option and how many of your partner’s answers each of you guessed. You can talk it over right there in the room chat.

Worked rounds: where you “matched” and where you “guessed”

Lena and Mark are playing with the couples deck. The questions below were made up for this example, but they work the way the game’s do: a short question and a few ready-made options.

  • Round 1. Different answers, one correct guess

Question: “There’s one last slice of cake in the fridge. What do you do?” Options: eat it quietly; split it fairly; leave it for you. Lena picks “split it fairly” for herself and guesses “eat it quietly” for Mark. Mark picks “eat it quietly” for himself and guesses “leave it for you” for Lena. After the reveal: the answers differ, so there’s no match. Lena guessed Mark’s answer; Mark didn’t guess Lena’s.

Round tally: matched 0; Lena guessed 1; Mark guessed 0.

  • Round 2. Same answer, nobody guessed

Question: “What are you having on movie night?” Options: something salty; something sweet; nothing, don’t distract me. Both pick “something salty” for themselves. But Lena was sure Mark would go for sweet, and Mark was sure Lena watches movies without snacks. There’s a match, and zero correct guesses.

The most curious outcome: you’re more alike than you each assumed. Round tally: matched 1; guessed 0 and 0.

  • Round 3. Different answers, both guessed

Question: “What temperature do you like at home?” Options: cool and fresh; warm as summer; I don’t mind. Lena picks “warm as summer”, Mark picks “cool and fresh”, and each names the other’s choice exactly. No match, yet both guessed right.

Different tastes and knowing each other well go together just fine. Round tally: matched 0; guessed 1 and 1.

  • The result after five rounds

Lena and Mark skipped round four: the question didn’t grab them. In round five they both picked the same option; Lena guessed it, Mark didn’t. The result: you picked the same answer in 2 of 4 revealed rounds; Lena guessed 3 of Mark’s answers, Mark guessed 1 of Lena’s.

A skipped round doesn’t count and doesn’t cost you anything.

“Matched” vs “guessed”: what’s the difference

“Matched” is about the two of you: independently, you picked the same option. It’s a shared number, one per couple.

“Guessed” is about each of you separately: your guess about your partner turned out to be their actual answer. There are two of these numbers, one each, and they can be very different.

One doesn’t follow from the other. You can match in all five rounds and never guess right, if each of you assumed the other was your opposite. You can match in none and guess everything: you’re different and you know it perfectly well. Neither is a grade. The game reports facts and draws no conclusions about your relationship.

When to play it

The couples deck is meant for people who already know each other: questions about habits, weekends, shared plans and the funny small stuff of everyday life. That’s exactly why guessing is fun: you already have an opinion about what your partner will say, and the game puts it to the test.

On an evening together the game takes about ten minutes: sit side by side, a phone each, no peeking. Apart, it’s easy to play at different times: one of you answers at lunch, the other before bed, and the reveal waits for both. An unfinished game waits for up to seven days.

A small tip: hold your comments until all five rounds are done. Let the surprises pile up, because talking through the whole result is more fun than picking apart each round.

Questions about the rules

Can my partner see my answer before they’ve answered?
No. Until you’ve both answered, the answers are hidden from both of you. They open at the same time.
What if my partner doesn’t answer until tomorrow?
That’s fine: the game waits for up to seven days. You answer when it suits you, they answer when it suits them, and the round opens as soon as you’ve both replied.
Can we skip a question?
Yes, any of them. Skipping takes nothing away: the round simply isn’t counted in the result.
Do we need to sign up?
Not for your first game: no email required. You create a room, your partner joins by link, and you let them in.
What counts as a good result?
Nothing does. The result is facts: how often you picked the same option and how many answers each of you guessed. It isn’t a test or a rating of you as a couple; zero correct guesses is as good a reason to talk as five.
